2. The fish we chose was called Poecilia reticulata. Its origin is Brazil, and its average size is about 3.5 centimeters long. It has many splotches of bright colors, including yellow, black, green, red, and white.
3. The predator we chose is called Dermitator Maculatus, and its common name is the fat sleeper. It's origins are Southern North America, the Bahamas, and Latin America.
4. The type of habitat the guppies live in depends on the amount of predators because sometimes guppies can live in an environment protected by a dam, and this dam prevents the predators from getting to the guppies.
5. John Endler is a an evolutionary biologist. He studied wild guppies in Trinidad.
6. Pool 1: The guppy coloration is brightly multi-colored with large spots.
Pool 2: Medium coloration on body and tail, with medium-sized spots.
Pool 3: Drab coloration, very small spots concentrated near tail.
7. I think guppies have different coloration so they can attract mates. I also think it's so, in different environments, they will always find some place to blend in with the environment so predators have a lesser chance of seeing and eating it.
% of Brightest Guppies (10 generations) | % of Bright Guppies (10 generations) | % of Drab Guppies (10 generations) | % of DrabbestGuppies (10 generations) | |
Trial 1 Guppy: Even Mix Predators: 30 Rivulus | 57% | 25% | 14% | 5% |
Trial 2 Guppy: Even Mix Predators: 30 Rivulus, 30 Acara | 4% | 61% | 35% | 0% |
Trial 3 Guppy: Even Mix Predators: 30 Rivulus, 30 Acara, 30 Cichlid | 0% | 11% | 7% | 82% |
Trial 4 Guppy: Mostly Bright Predators: 30 Rivulus | 64% | 30% | 5% | 2% |
Trial 5 Guppy: Mostly Drab Predators: 30 Rivulus, 30 Acara, 30 Cichlid | 0% | 0% | 0% | 100% |
8. Predators influence guppy coloration because they see the brightly colored guppies more easily than the drab guppies.
9. I think my hypothesis was correct because the results show that in bright environments, the bright guppies thrived, and in drab environments, the drab ones thrived.
10. It means that the male guppies get eaten before their mates, so their mates have a lesser chance of being eaten because of the males.
11. I think different colored guppies live in different parts of the stream because different part of the stream have different colorations, just like the guppies.
12. I think that the drab guppies would die out, since their populations were the most when there were lots of predators.
13. I think that the bright guppies would die pout, since their populations were the highest when there weren't a lot of predators.
